August Member of the Month

Shawna has been a customer service agent at Southwest Airlines since 1995 and a union rep since 1999. Prior to this, she was at USAir for 6 years. She currently holds the position as LL846 Secretary Treasurer.

Shawna believes that the IAM has a great importance in the workplace since it helps give equal guidelines for every employee. When asked how can the union and local lodge improve, she stated "With more support from our members. I would love to see more members come to the meetings, this would give us more ideas and give support to others."

She believes the best of times are now. She enjoys the one-on-one contact with the passengers, especially the regulars, and having fun with her co-workers.

She believes the worst of times were the installation of the kiosk machines and the reduction of manpower it caused.

She believes that the hardest part of her job is trying to please EVERYONE. "It's an impossible job."

"Many people wonder why pay union dues? I tell them to look at it as an insurance policy. You carry life/car insurance, hoping you won't need to use it, but when the time comes, aren't you glad you have it?! We may not make everyone happy, but we try. We strive every day to make sure we have a job, food for our families, and a sense of pride in ourselves. Take every opportunity to fix problems in your workplace for the betterment of youself and your coworkers."

Shawna enjoys time with her family and her 8-year old daughter, Michele Olivia.
